The Pupil Premium Grant

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) was introduced in April 2011. This is funding allocated to schools in addition to the main funding schools receive. This funding is specifically directed at students who are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years, in order to raise their attainment and close the gap between them and their peers.

Registering for the PPG

Because a Universal Free School Meal for EYFS and Reception children has been introduced, children eligible for FSM must register for schools to receive the Pupil Premium Grant. If you think your child may be eligible, more information and application forms can found on the Herts Direct website

Eligibility

This funding is specifically directed at students who are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years.

In addition: PPG may also be claimed for children of armed services personnel and for children who are in Local Authority care.

Children who have been in local-authority care for at least one day also attract PPG. However, funding for these pupils does not go to their school; it goes to the Virtual School Head (VSH) in the local authority that looks after the child. The VSH is responsible for managing pupil premium funding for looked after children.

Schools may receive a grant for each pupil who has left local authority care because of one of the following:

• Adoption
• A special guardianship order
• A child arrangements order
• A residence order

Allocating the PPG

The Department for Education states that: “schools, head teachers and teachers will decide how to use the PPG allocated, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for individual pupils.”

At Knebworth Primary and Nursery school the Inclusion Manager is responsible for allocation of the PPG. Progress of all children is tracked half termly and children who may benefit from extra provision are identified. A range of support from school staff and external professionals may be accessed.
